Certification Process

STEP 1: Schedule and pass exam

The first step in the process is passing the certification exam. Exam fees vary depending on the mode of testing.

STEP 2: Submit application

The application packet includes documentation of education, experience, references, supervisor assessment, training, professional membership, and commitment to the Standards for Practice of North American Child and Youth Care Professionals. The packet includes any needed forms and detailed instructions. There are also surveys related to the certification process. There is a $100 application processing fee which is submitted with the application.

STEP 3: Submit portfolio

The portfolio is a written assessment that is peer reviewed by committees of other certified Child and Youth Care Professionals. It includes a number of competency-based activities of which seven must be completed. This allows the applicant to reflect on and demonstrate his or her unique contribution and experiences within the field as a Child and Youth Care Professional. This portfolio is submitted electronically to the certification board office.

STEP 4: Receipt of certificate (or request for further clarifications, if needed)

Once professional competency has been demonstrated by meeting the requirements for certification, the certification board will issue a certificate that supports the rights and privileges to use the CYC-P designation as a certified Child and Youth Care Professional.

If further clarifications are needed or the requirements are not met, the certification board will suggest what specific areas need further work or recommend other appropriate levels of certification.
